A look around Good Templars Hall
In 1869, the International Order of Good Templars purchased the Good Templars Hall site for $250. Construction of the hall was begun ca 1870. There is no official record of when the building was completed, but we know there was a notice in the Puget Sound Weekly of a "ball" being held there on February 22nd, 1878. Over the next few years, the owners added various elements, such as flagpoles, chimneys, and exterior stairs.
In 1902 the Port Townsend chapter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles was founded, and in 1904 they purchased the Good Templars Hall for $1,050. Over the next 5-6 years, the new owners removed the chimneys and installed the vaulted ceiling on the 2nd floor.
Over the next 3+ decades, numerous alterations were made, most like the metal fire stairs in 1931 and the installation of asbestos siding in 1958 did more to damage the character of the building than add to it. During this same period, various windows were boarded up. The building also had to survive a small fire on the first floor. In the 1970s, the front entrance was boarded up and replaced with a door on the outside wall, eliminating the recessed entry. A T-bar ceiling was added during the decade.
Thankfully in 1995, the Fraternal Order of Eagles sold the building to a private company that began restoring the building to its original form.
Today, fully restored and actively occupied, the Good Templars Hall is the only remaining example of the first generation of commercial and institutional buildings in the waterfront district. The building's austere symmetrical form, multi-pane windows, and plain beveled siding contrasts strikingly with the exuberant Victorian-style brick buildings for which the town is best known.
By its architectural style and its location, today, as when it was originally built, the Good Templars Hall is a significant Port Townsend landmark.
